The Turks and Caicos Islands are famed for their sparkling waters, exquisite bays and magnificent coral reef. So take a break from taking a break and get involved with some of these pursuits.
1. Scuba Diving
No trip to the Turks and Caicos is complete without an excursion to explore the vast coral reef that surrounds the islands, as well as the numerous seawalls and cays. You’ll find diving excursions run from all the major resorts, as well as the numerous harbours and marinas dotted around the islands. The reef runs for almost 20 miles and, along with the seawalls, is home to all manner of wildlife. You can expect to see dolphins, sharks, tuna and more even on your very first dive.
Whilst you’ll likely dive as a group, you’ll be looked after by certified instructors and given all the necessary lessons before your first dive. Many visitors discover their passion for diving amongst the reef around the Turks and Caicos and go on to become certified divers themselves. A number of schools across the islands offer you the opportunity to do internationally recognised diving courses.
2. Biking
If you are keen explore inland there is no better way than to book onto a bike trail. There are a number that run across the islands, catering for all levels of fitness and experience. Book on a guided tour to visit a huge variety of the island’s hidden gems, from intriguing coves to luscious bays.
For the more experienced or ambitious, take the old coastal roads established by the islands first settlers and immerse yourself in the beauty and history of breath-taking bluffs, rocky outcrops and magnificent caves.
3. Golf
The Turks and Caicos are home to a number of courses; from arguably one of the most challenging to certainly one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean. No matter what your level of skill and experience, if you wish to play 9 or 18 holes you’ll be more than welcome at one of the Turks and Caicos clubs.
Whilst you’ll be expected to adhere to usual golfing etiquette, most clubs are friendly and welcoming, offering visitors the chance to hire clubs if required. As many of the clubs are intimate, be sure to ring up and book your tee off time a day or two before you intend to play.
4. Sailing
If you are desperate to explore the magnificent sea around Turks and Caicos without becoming fully immersed in it, sailing may be the activity for you. Sail boats are available to hire from a number of the islands harbours and marinas giving you the perfect opportunity to tack out into the Caribbean.
If you have never sailed before, enquire at your resort about lessons as the calm waters are a fantastic place to learn for the first time. Otherwise, charter a private sailboat with a captain and sit back whilst he navigates you around some of the islands’ magnificent shoreline.
5. Fishing
Perhaps you are searching for something a little more exhilarating; a tussle with some deep sea game, perhaps. If so, a fishing excursion could be right up your seat and there are a number to choose from. The Caribbean is home to yellowfin tuna, blue marlin, wahoo and many more varieties of exciting fish for you to hunt.
Deep sea fishing and big game fishing are popular across the islands, with trips running out of most harbours and marinas. You won’t need experience or your own tackle, simply book the night before with your favourite captain. Alternatively, charter a private fishing boat and take on the seas with your own party. Prizes, of course, for whoever lands the biggest catch!
