Top 10 Breeds Involved In Dog Attacks

Although often described as man’s best friend, dogs can be very dangerous when they are out of control. According to the American Humane Association, 4.7 million Americans are bitten by dogs every year. Statistics show that some breeds are more likely to turn on humans than others. Let’s take a look at the ten most dangerous dog breeds.

1. Pit Bulls
Pit bulls were bred as fighting dogs. They are particularly dangerous because their instinct is to lock onto their prey and bite down until the victim is dead or incapacitated. Pit bulls are responsible for approximately two thirds of dog bite fatalities in the United States, which has led to many states banning people from owning pit bulls.

2. Rottweilers
Rottweilers are big, powerful dogs. They are often used as guard dogs as they are highly territorial. Although Rottweilers are usually very obedient, they have been known to attack people. They are responsible for about 12% of deaths resulting from dog bites.

3. German Shepherds
German shepherds are known for their intelligence and fearlessness, which is why they are often used as police dogs. When properly trained, German shepherds are very obedient, but they can become stressed and aggressive when the owners do not establish a hierarchy in the home.

4. Huskies
Huskies are generally loyal and friendly, but when they are provoked they are very dangerous. Between 1979 and 1997, huskies killed 15 people in the United States.

5. Alaskan Malamutes
Alaskan malamutes need a lot of exercise. When owners aren’t able to provide high levels of daily activity, Alaskan malamutes become disobedient and dangerous.

6. Doberman Pinschers
Doberman pinschers are alert, intelligent and loyalty. However, if they are provoked or feel their owner is threatened, they can attack.

7. Chow Chow
Chow chows might look cute, but they can easily become stressed and easily provoked if they don’t have the right training. Even this cuddly breed has sharp teeth hidden beneath its fluffy coat, which can deliver a nasty bite.

8. Presa Canario
The Presa Canario breed of dog was bred to protect livestock from attacks by wild animals. These dogs were later used as fighting dogs. With their large canine teeth and powerful jaws, an attack by a Presa Canario is a terrifying and often fatal experience.

9. Boxer
Boxer dogs make great pets: they are loyal, intelligent and friendly. However, they are big dogs that have a lot of energy. If the owner isn’t willing to give the dog enough activity in its daily life, a boxer can easily become frustrated and aggressive.

10. Dalmatian
Dalmatians are extremely intelligent dogs. They need a lot of mental stimulation and physical activity or they become bored and highly strung. About 10% of Dalmatians are born deaf, which makes them difficult to train.

Are All Dogs Dangerous?
Belonging to one of the breeds listed above doesn’t mean that a dog is necessarily going to be aggressive. Almost all dogs can be controlled through proper training and a structured environment. However, if a dog’s owner fails to establish a hierarchy or discipline the dog correctly, keep your distance – that dog could easily turn aggressive.
