Rihanna Files Lawsuit Against Her Ex-Accountant
The Barbados-native superstar is suing her accountant of seven years after she alleges that he is at fault for her being audited by the government. She went so far as to call her accountants “beancounters who squandered her hard earned money leading to the audit,” according to the New York Daily News.
Years of Service
The lawsuit was filed by Robyn Fenty, better known by her stage name Rihanna, and alleges that her accountant had been her financial adviser since she was 16-years-old. Having been with her before she made it big, it’s easy to say that she trusted these people with handling her finances. When choosing someone to handle your finances, one must do their research. Although the New York Daily News report did not mention the accounting firm’s past handlings, there may have been something Rihanna could have uncovered in their past business handlings that would have alerted her to any possible future issues.
Her lawsuit is seeking undisclosed damages, but it does state that she is alleging breach of contract and negligence. Specifically, the lawsuit claims that the young singer lost millions from her 2009 tour because the firm did not adequately handle her expenses, income, and cash flow, according to the news report. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has informed the singer that they are auditing her for the tax years 2008 through 2010.
More Than Just Numbers
In addition to the contractual issues, Rihanna is alleging that her financial advisor failed to warn her of several things, including unpaid royalties and for not informing her that she should not purchase a home in Beverly Hills following the aforementioned tour. The Daily News report explains that Rihanna fired her accountant back in September when she first became aware of the issues that she is now alleging. The paper reached out to the accountant, but those calls were not returned with any comment.
