Keep Iron Out
Iron that’s commonly found in small amounts in water will lead to rust over time, but washing iron pots and pans in your dishwasher can make it happen even faster. If you have cookware that contains iron, wash it by hand to help prevent rust from showing up.
Run an Acidic Cycle
Acid helps to dissolve rust, so if you notice some or even as a preventative measure, run an acidic cycle every month or so. To do it, fill up the detergent dispenser with white vinegar or lemon juice and just run it through a normal cycle with no dishes.
Scrub It Away
When you notice little spots of rust forming on the inside of the dishwasher, fine steel wool and some firm but gentle pressure will help take it right away. Adding a little rust remover might help speed up the process.
This process works well when the rubber coating starts to wear away on the rack inside the dishwasher. Repair smaller areas with the wool and rust remover, but if the coating really starts to come off you may want to consider exchanging the whole rack. Look for a serial number or product number and call the manufacturer to ask about a replacement.
General Cleaning
If you use your dishwasher as intended on a regular basis, the soap and water that’s being moved around in there is more than enough to keep it clean. Just use it like normal and do your once-monthly vinegar or lemon juice cycle and the inside should stay wonderfully clean. On the outside, just use a damp cloth or sponge and a touch of dish detergent to keep it clean.
There may be other elements of your specific model that require cleaning on a regular or semi-regular basis. Just give the instruction manual a good once-over so you’re always on top of the situation and your dishwasher remains in good working order all-year round.
