Introducing Verold Studio: Online 3D Collaboration for CG Artist

Posted January 24, 2013 by Ross McKegney

Verold is a software startup based in Toronto, Canada. They have a grand ambition, to make it faster and easier to create 3D experiences for the web. This means web-based 3D games, but much more - Verold is building the tools that will facilitate bringing 3D presentation and collaboration to websites and web apps of all types. Imagine: rather than see images of the latest Ferrari F12 Berlinetta on http://ferrari.com - open the doors and look inside, then experience the feel of driving it.

Their team brings the full force of backgrounds in game engine design, geometry processing, and web platform engineering to the task of optimizing 3D models and making them look beautiful on the web. Rather than tell you, see for yourself below:

"We live, and experience the world in three dimensions. However, an increasingly important part of our high-tech world is still stuck in two dimensions - that of the web.  The Verold Studio is our first step in making it easier for CG artists to show their beautiful work in its full glory on the web," said Jad Yaghi, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, Verold Inc. "We have gone to great lengths to ensure that artists now have a medium that will allow them to show the world what they can truly create, and we believe this will change how 3D content is consumed."

Verold's flagship product is Verold Studio, a web-based platform for collaborating on 3D assets. With Verold Studio, you can easily import 3D models; collaboratively review models, scenes, and levels; then deliver them to our runtime or your own.

If you produce 3D content using 3D Studio Max, Maya, ZBrush, Blender, or any other 3D package, you can take that content and easily send it to Verold Studio.

Uploading to the Verold Studio public gallery is unlimited and free. There is a Pro account option for CG artists who want to use the collaboration tools in private with clients. And an Enterprise license for partner sites looking for a white label solution or to use the API to build custom applications or games.

This is just the beginning for Verold however, "Imagine a world where anyone can create their own 3D art, games or worlds," added Yaghi. "The beauty of what Verold is trying to achieve is to make it simple for people to quickly create 3D content and worlds. It will only be a matter of time before there is an explosion in game development and we hope to be a big reason why."

There are lots of other 3D viewers for the web, most notably Sketchfab and p3d. Verold Studio differentiates by focusing on the needs of the professional CG artist with collaboration tools and a sophisticated material system. And an animation system that is currently being tested by the community in closed alpha.
